About Us

The April 22nd Memorial Group (A22MG) was established in 2004, on the initiative of Reverend Frank J. Stewart, Jr.  The founding members of the A22MG include individuals from the families of the thirteen government officials executed on South Beach on April 22, 1980, the first public victims of this kind of brutality in Monrovia, Liberia.  The thirteen men were executed by firing squad unjustly without fair military tribunals or ethical military execution protocol, following the April 12, 1980 coup d’etat that toppled the Tolbert Administration, assassinating the 20th President of Liberia, William R. Tolbert. Jr. and his Inner Security Detail.

Today the group is comprised of the families of President William R. Tolbert, Jr., five members of the President’s Inner Security Detail, the thirteen cabinet ministers and high officials of government executed on South Beach in Monrovia, as well as three other esteemed Liberian dignitaries. Our desire is to turn our pain into purpose by advocating for justice, human rights, equal rights, protection and inclusion not only in Liberia but globally. Their legacy compels us to serve and elevate humanity.   Our mission is to preserve the legacy of our fallen heroes who represent and embody for us, ALL who lost their lives unjustly through the years transcending ethnicity, socioeconomics and religion.  We are committed to the rebuilding of national trust, unity and harmony. “We Will Remember Them”.
